ATLANTA - Avard Moncur, head coach for Savannah College of Art and Design's cross country team in Atlanta, was awarded a gold medal at this year's summer Olympics in London. The three-time Olympian is a member of the Bahamas' men track and field team, which took first place in the 4x400-meter relay.

The Nassau, Bahamas, native represented his country at the 2000 Sydney and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. He earned a silver medal as a member of the 1,600-meter relay team in Beijing.

Moncur is a two-time NCAA Division I national champion at Auburn University in the 400-meter dash in 2000 and 2001. He also was a member of the 1,600-meter relay team that took second place at the 1999 and 2001 NCAA Division I Championships.

The Olympian is also a double world champion, winning the 400-meter dash and the 1,600-meter relay events in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in 2001. He also finished as the number one ranked runner in the world in the 400-meter dash that same year.

Moncur is a two-time International Association of Athletics Federations track and field world silver medalist (2005 Helsinki, 2007 Osaka) as a member of the Bahamas team and also received the bronze medal in the 2003 event held in Paris. He held the national record from 2001 to 2009 and has represented his country at various international track and field meets.
